Ummah Foundation and other charity and humanitarian organizations more often than not suffer the brunt of many health challenges. Numerous doctors have opted to leave the public sector and ventured into private practice. This renders the health division very expensive and few can afford to pay for the private services. The country now faces a brain drain due to better remuneration in more developed countries. Each day, Ummah Foundation is faced with myriads of medical appeals that ask for donations and contributions to enable our patients get local treatments or travel for medical care in India, South Africa and Britain. This is a very expensive exercise and meeting the costs and expenses for those involved is a very toll order for any organization. As a long-term strategy, we appeal to our donors to come in and help our Organization come up with a local hospital that is well-equipped and can cater for the needs of those who can’t afford the cost of the luxurious medical services. The colossal amounts that we spend to facilitate these many medical trips can be harmonized to have our own hospitals, dispensaries and health centres.
Ummah Foundation in the meantime is closely involved in short-term measures of addressing cataract operations to our rural folks in the Asal counties like Wajir, Turkana, Mandera and Marsabit. In these rural setups, people go blind merely because the cataracts they had could not be removed and cured in proper time. Ummah Foundation also purchased medical storage equipment and organized for its installation and commissioned a wind generator together with solar-powered refrigerators and solar panels for lighting Elmolo Health Centre in Turkana County. We also donate medical consumables to Elmolo hamlets and clinics in Daadab Refugee camp. The Health Centre at Loingalani is now supplied with medicines and medical apparatus and today we are happy to announce that even mothers can give birth in this clinic. Even those who have been affected by wars in Ethiopia and Southern Sudan, get their medical services from this health facility.
