UMMAH FOUNDATION
Ummah Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable organization that has been engaged in various charitable and humanitarian programs since its establishment in 2006. Over the past 18 years, Ummah Foundation has demonstrated outstanding commitment by successfully executing a wide array of projects and initiatives. These endeavors encompass a broad spectrum of activities, including providing educational scholarships to orphans, impoverished, and underprivileged students. The organization is also involved in social welfare initiatives, community empowerment projects, water and sanitation efforts, and medical activities such as assisting with medical bills, conducting cataract operations, and extending in-kind support to medical facilities in rural areas. Additionally, Ummah Foundation has been dedicated to prisoners’ rehabilitation programs, community development endeavors, the Udhiyah (Qurban) sacrifice, and distributing food relief to arid and semi-arid regions of the country.
The cumulative impact of these projects has been profound, contributing significantly to the overall advancement of Muslims. This impact is particularly evident in terms of increased employment opportunities and an elevated quality of life. With the allocation of suitable resources, Ummah Foundation aspires to continue its pivotal role in fostering a vibrant Muslim community while enhancing their social standing within society.
Ummah Foundation’s mission is deeply rooted in addressing critical issues that significantly impact the community. Among the foremost challenges faced by the Muslim community in Kenya and many other African countries is the pervasive presence of poverty and ignorance. This unfortunate circumstance has led to numerous children discontinuing their education to support their families or engaging in low-paying jobs to supplement household incomes. In order to break free from this detrimental cycle, it is imperative that we adopt innovative approaches, underscore the importance of education, and actively encourage our communities to make substantial investments in it.
Education stands as the singular tool through which our Muslim community can elevate itself and compete on a level playing field with the broader Kenyan population. By prioritizing education, we can reverse the prevailing patterns and usher in a new era where Muslims are not only participants in policy-making and leadership but are also acknowledged for their contributions. This is why Ummah Foundation has undertaken a pioneering role, placing significant emphasis on Education Bursaries and Scholarships.
In the five decades since Kenya achieved independence, the Muslim populace has often been marginalized, largely due to the absence of education in areas predominantly inhabited by Muslims. Recent statistics continue to highlight the disparity: of the 10 million-strong Muslim population (comprising 40% of the total), a mere 3% have managed to attain a university education. Ummah Foundation responded to this stark inequity by introducing the Education Bursary scheme, aimed at rectifying this inconceivable imbalance.
